Understanding Fire Damage

There’s Much More to Fire Damage Than Burnt Items

  • Continual damage and corrosion can be incurred by ash and smoke if left untreated in your home.
  • The odors of smoke can seep into the materials of your home, continuing to cause problems until they are professionally removed.
  • Walls and ceilings can be discolored within a matter of minutes.
  • White finishes and kitchen appliances can turn yellow within a matter of hours.
  • Smoke quickly tarnishes metal, and it also causes etching in glass.

Our Fire Restoration Process

Upon arrival, our fire damage restoration team will:

  • Identify the source of the accident to determine the nature of the fire
  • Evaluate wet areas which may have been soaked as a result of firefighting
  • Remediate water damage in said wet areas
  • Remove contents from the home:

    • Immediate items which are needed for the next seven days, such as medication, clothing, etc.
    • Packing out the other contents of your home for storage and cleaning.
  • Assess the type of fire, soot, and smoke damage caused by the fire to determine the most effective cleaning methods.
  • Perform structural restoration:

    • Removing materials which would seal in the smoke, such as burnt wood and insulation
    • Treating surfaces tainted with smoke odors
    • Evaluating which carpets and coverings may need removal
  • Board-up any broken doors or windows to minimize the chances of burglary, vandalism, or additional damages from environmental elements.
  • Thoroughly remove soot from all walls, carpets, furniture, and any other damaged contents.
  • Deodorize the home to permanently remove the smell of smoke.
  • Perform any necessary fire damage repairs to complete the fire restoration process.
  • Return your possessions and helping you to return to normal life.

In addition to restoring the property, our fire restoration team will perform a packout, which means we will take a well-documented inventory of your personal belongings, transport them to a safe location for storage, and salvage as much as possible.

ServiceMaster Absolute will work closely with you and your insurance company, helping the fire damage restoration process go as quickly and smoothly as possible to restore your peace of mind.

Residential & Commercial Fire Restoration Services

At ServiceMaster Absolute, we’ve successfully completed some of the largest fire restoration jobs in San Diego history. When one of the largest church sanctuaries in San Diego suffered extensive damage in a fire, our team of certified professionals delivered prompt and courteous fire damage restoration service.

Within three days, ServiceMaster Absolute was able to transform the 750,000 square foot, seven-story Mission Valley sanctuary from a burnt, smoky shell into a glistening, clean, and smoke-free environment. Three weddings were saved as a result of our restoration efforts, and not a trace of soot was in sight when the brides’ long, white wedding dress trains traveled down the church’s beautiful red carpet.

Fire Damage FAQ

How long does the restoration process usually take?

Unfortunately, we can’t make blanket statements about the average duration of restoration jobs, because it’s highly dependant on several factors. It depends on the extent of the damage, the size of the property, and the difficulty of restoration. While we can’t give a precise estimate here, we encourage you to contact us and we can give you a quote based on your situation.

Can I do the job myself?

We do not advise doing fire and smoke damage restoration as a DIY job. Fire restoration is no ordinary cleaning job — it requires pretesting, knowing which cleaning agents to use, mixing deodorizing and cleaning solutions, and understanding proper dilution rates. Without the knowledge of how specifically to treat varying degrees of fire and smoke damage, your hard work and efforts may amount to very little. If you have questions about the process, please contact us.

Are there safety concerns?

In a word, yes — and that’s why it’s ideal to let a professional team handle the job. Smoke is inherently dangerous to humans, but there are also other hazards, such as unstable walls and flooring, exposed electrical components, and slip hazards. We make sure to unplug appliances and we advise that electrical power should be turned off until your home is evaluated by an electrician.

Can I turn on my HVAC unit?

Please consult your local HVAC contractor before turning on your heating and air conditioning unit.

What items should I keep while the damage restoration takes place?

  • Cash and Checks
  • Small Valuables (jewelry, etc)
  • Personal Documents
  • Valuable Art
  • Flammables
  • Weapons and Ammunition
  • Gasoline Cans
  • Flammables

How do I keep track of non-restorable items?

We recommend that you make a list of items (including food) that are deemed as nonrestorable. On the list, keep track of the item, its quantity, the year purchased, and the cost. Alternatively, use a form provided by your insurance company to track losses.

Do I need to move out while the restoration process occurs?

It depends on the scope of the job. Some severe jobs require homeowners to vacate. It’s important to consider how much your life may be disrupted by the restoration process. If you decide to vacate, remember to consider the following things: establishing a mail forwarding address, stopping deliveries, and notifying the utility companies of your absence.

Do I need to hire general contractors?

This is another aspect that’s highly dependant on the nature of the accident. Sometimes general contractors are needed for drywall repair, electrical work, carpentry, etc. We can help you determine whether or not it’s necessary to hire general contractors.

Do my possessions need to be moved out of the premises?

It may be necessary to remove some of your belongings or all of them, depending on the severity of the damage. We can work with you and your insurance representative to manage the packout process.

What about valuable items, such as china, family heirlooms, art, etc?

If a high-value item has smoke or fire damage, it might need to be restored by a qualified specialist. If it’s beyond our expertise, we can help you find a local restorer who can get the job done.

Who is responsible for payment?

You (the property owner) are responsible for payment, and you’ll need to sign a form authorizing the payment. In the case of insurance claims, we usually only collect the deductible or co-payment from you, and we’ll bill the rest of your balance to the insurance provider. Things can get more complex if the fire accident incurred large losses — your mortgage company may be included as a payee, and you might need to get a signature from them. When not covered by insurance, you will owe the full amount. If you contact us directly, we’ll be happy to answer any additional questions you have about the payment process.

Will I have access to my things while they’re in storage?

You are free to access your possessions, but it may require advance notice, and a meeting with your project manager to give you access. This may include a service charge.

Note: Please refer to your Insurance Agent or Claims Representative for insurance-related queries.
